Led by Dr. Adam Yates, the team spent several years meticulously excavating these fossils, finally unveiling the Aardonyx in 2009.

It was first discovered by paleontologist Prof Paul Sereno in 2009. He had been studying the Early Jurassic fossil beds near the city of Saldanha Bay in South Africa when he stumbled across some extraordinary bones that he immediately recognized as belonging to a new species of dinosaur. After further analysis, it became clear that these belonged to Aardonyx celestae—a previously unknown species of herbivore that lived during the Early Jurassic period approximately 200 million years ago.

Classification and Features

Belonging to the sauropod family, this dinosaur is classified as a basal or early sauropodomorph dinosaur – a group of long-necked, large-bodied quadrupedal herbivores.

These early sauropodomorphs are known for their interesting mix of characteristics, transitioning from the small, bipedal dinosaurs earlier in the lineage to the massive, four-legged sauropods that would eventually roam the Earth. Interestingly, this dino seems to be a key transitional species between these two groups.

Early Jurassic Giant

It was a large, plant-eating dinosaur that lived around 200 million years ago during the Early Jurassic Period. Most evident from its fossilized remains, the Aardonyx possessed a long neck, which allowed it to reach high for vegetation, and a massive, barrel-shaped body.

Although its forelimbs were shorter than its more iconic sauropod descendants, its hind legs were quite long and robust, suggesting it could switch between bipedal and quadrupedal locomotion.

 

Physical Characteristics

It had an unusual body shape compared to other dinosaurs. Its body was quite stocky, with short legs and large feet, giving it an almost hippo-like appearance. Its neck was also much longer than average—up to 3 meters long—and its skull was unusually flat.

This allowed it to feed much more efficiently on low-lying vegetation like ferns and horsetails, while still being agile enough to move around quickly thanks to its powerful shoulder muscles.

What sets this dinosaur apart from its contemporaries are its unique skeletal characteristics. These features allow scientists to better understand the transitional phase of early sauropodomorph dinosaurs as they evolved into the massive sauropods we commonly associate with the dinosaur age.

Interestingly, the elongated foot bones and large claws on its hind feet indicate that Aardonyx may have been partly adapted for a predominantly bipedal locomotion.

Aardonyx’s habitat was likely characterized by abundant vegetation and water sources, surrounded by floodplains and large river systems that attracted a wide variety of other prehistoric animals.

Behavior and Habits

Although not much is known about how exactly this creature behaved, scientists believe that it probably lived in small herds and moved around frequently in search of food sources. Its long neck would have allowed it to reach food sources that were out of reach for most other dinosaurs.

While its powerful shoulder muscles meant that it could still move quickly despite its hefty build. They were likely omnivores, eating both plants and small animals like lizards or insects when necessary.
